Checkmate! Sarah Jessica Parker proudly watches her son James try out his chess moves in New York

He may only be eight years old, but little James Broderick already knows his way round a chess board.

Watched by his proud mother Sarah Jessica Parker, the youngster seemed confident at he took on an older opponent in New York yesterday.

Father Matthew Broderick also watched his son make his moves in Washington Square Park.

The family were clearly enjoying their day out together with the Sex And The City actress smiling broadly as James played.

Dressed casually in grey trousers and a loose fitting grey top with her hair pulled back into a ponytail, the low key 46-year-old star looked a far cry from her usual high fashion image.

Along with helping James with his chess match, the stars took their 22-month-old twins Marion and Tabitha on the day out.
