Tata Steel round 3 report

Tata Steel Round 3 ReportAnish Giri shocks Magnus Carlsen with black pieces

Dutch youngster Anish Giri stunned the top-seeded Magnus Carlsen in the 3rd round of the
Tata Steel 2011 chess tournament and inflicted him a defeat after only 22 moves of play. Carlsen played an opening novelty, but Chessdom commentator GM Christian Bauer evaluated that White can reach an equal position at best. However, Carlsen tried to complicate matters, but Giri's energetic play netted him a piece and White immediately gave up.

Jan Smeets blundered a small combination that cost him a pawn and the former World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov dully converted the advantage. The reigning World Champion Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw by Erwin l'Ami. Hikaru Nakamura defeated Alexei Shirov after the grueling 93-moves long fight and took the pole position with 2.5 points.
